The Importance Of Self-Care:
If you’re going through a contested divorce or litigation, you are going to experience several emotions, including grief, anger, resentment, and others. These are all normal, but if left unchecked, can linger or turn into something worse. These emotions can also cloud your judgment when important decisions need to be made, and more importantly, can and will affect your children.
As much as your lawyer is concerned about your feelings and wishes to help you, your lawyer is not your therapist, and your lawyer is likely more expensive than your therapist – so use one. For many people the added cost for personal counselling on top of legal fees is just too much to handle. But don’t despair, there are other options out there. Many churches have pastors or ministers who will provide counselling, and there are community organizations such as Community Links in Airdrie, and the YWCA and Calgary Counselling Centre in Calgary, that provide options for individual and family counselling. While your lawyer is looking out for your legal interests, don’t neglect your emotional and spiritual well-being.

Have you ever considered preparing a Personal Directive? Most of us do not think about future probabilities and the chance that something might happen to us that would render us incapable of making decisions for ourselves, young or old. But the fact is, it does happen. There are car accidents, diseases, and other events that can have a huge impact on our independence. In those cases, service providers look for a person with authority to make decisions about health care, living arrangements, etc. Easy you might say, my family will take care of me. But, what if they are too far away? What if one wants you to have homecare, but another wants you to be in a long-term care facility? What if you are in a coma with no chance of recovery, and your daughter wants to preserve your life at all costs? What if you hold religious beliefs that effect your decisions about healthcare, but one of your family members does not agree with your choice?
A Personal Directive names a person, or persons, who have the veto on making decisions for you, and the document can also set out your personal wishes and guidance on healthcare and other matters. Having a Personal Directive can also eliminate the need for a costly and potentially contentious court application for a guardianship order. For more information on this and other estate matters, please send me an email or call my office for a consultation.

Well, the first 6 months have nearly flown by! I have found the City of Airdrie to be very welcoming, and the legal community in particular to be inviting. A special thank you goes out to the firms of Hasset & Reid, Warnock & Rathgeber, and Horne Wytrychowski for connecting with me. I plan to continue integrating with the community and look forward to upcoming events, such as the Behind the Masque gala. I am doing my best to support local business in Airdrie, which I think is important for this City. I look forward to meeting with Airdronians to see how I can be of assistance in your family law matters throughout the coming year.

It feels like it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. As much as I have enjoyed my years working at firms in Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary, it feels great to open my own practice in Airdrie. To be a lawyer was my childhood goal, and I never doubted this day would arrive. So please, fill in your information below or use the above Contact page to connect with me. After all, helping you with your legal needs was the reason I got into this profession in the first place. Well, maybe “Matlock” had something to do with it.
